Pre-concert talk at 6.30pm. Leeds University Emeritus Professor Julian Rushton explores the Hungarian folk tradition that weaves itself through the music of Bartok, Kodály and Haydn.
Gábor Takács-Nagy, the new Hungarianborn Music Director of Manchester Camerata, has already caused a stir. The mercurial former leader of the Takács Quartet is a fine musician and inspirational figurehead. In this concert, he conducts works with Hungarian connections including Bartók’s energetic Concerto for two pianos and percussion played by three wonderful soloists. Dame Evelyn Glennie needs no introduction, nor does her regular piano partner, Philip Smith, and The Bridgewater Hall’s new Associate Artist, Noriko Ogawa makes one of many appearances in the season. After the main concert, all three perform a work written specially for them by Japanese composer, Yoshihiro Kanno.
At 9.45pm we are delighted to present a late night performance by Evelyn Glennie, Noriko Ogawa and Philip Smith of Yoshihiro Kanno's Earth Stream for piano duo and percussion (UK première) and Brahms' Hungarian Dances.
Part of The Bridgewater Hall's International Concert Series.
