Douglas Boyd is currently Music Director of Manchester Camerata. His relationship with the orchestra as its main conductor over the last five years has seen the Manchester Camerata’s repute increase dramatically to become one of the leading chamber orchestras in the UK. Under Dougie’s direction, their concert at the Barbican in the Mostly Mozart Festival last July was received with great acclaim.
Having started his career as an oboist, Dougie is now attracting a lot of attention as a conductor, both in Europe and the US, where he is Artistic Director for St. Paul’s Chamber Orchestra. Since his US conducting debut in 2000, he has appeared with many UK orchestras as well as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Dougie is noted for his interesting interpretations and his way of delivering concerts in the most accessible way to his audience. One of his key beliefs is that classical music is as relevant today as it has ever been. He is very keen to share his enthusiasm and usually likes to speak a little before each piece about what excites him about it.
Also committed to working with students, Dougie has conducted the orchestras of the Guildhall School of Music and Oxford and Cambridge Universities on many occasions. He regularly conducts the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra and the RNCM Chamber Orchestra.
Boyd’s recordings with Manchester Camerata of Beethoven’s Symphony no.2 & no.5, Mahler Symphony no.4, and Mozart’s Symphony no.s 40 and 41, recently released on AVIE, have been received with universal critical acclaim.
